MONDAY MORNING

That morning, Art found himself on the bad side of town, surrounded by three attackers. There were big guys, though none as tall as he was. He could have run, but they also looked to be in decent shape too. Fighting them off looked like the only option as his Glock was safely locked up in his travel bag at the moment.

One of the attackers accosting him was brandishing a black knife. He’d have to make that man his first priority or else risk getting stabbed as his attention was occupied by the other two attackers. Without warning, Art lunged at the knife-wielder, reaching out for his weapon arm. The attacker retracted his arm and brought it forward again to stab at Art, who caught him by the wrist. Once Art had his wrist, he turned away, pulled the man’s arm over his shoulder, and lifted his hips as he pulled the arm, executing a perfect hip throw that slammed the man to the ground. Art stomped on his head, and the attacker relinquished the knife.

The other two men hesitated once they realized Art had control of the knife. He spun it underhand and put his hands up in a fighting stance. The two attackers started to circle, making it impossible for Art to keep an eye on both of them. Instead of waiting to be assaulted, he picked the one in front and launched his attack. His foes hopped backward each time Art slashed. Forgetting the knife attack altogether, Art rushed and tackled him. As they hit the ground, Art drove his knee into the man’s groin and then slashed his throat, leaving a red line.

Just as Art rose, the other attacker tackled him to the ground, sending the knife flying out of reach. Art pushed to get his feet under him and spun until they were both grappling face to face. This guy appeared to be a lot stronger than the other two and drove Art onto his back. Art quickly wrapped his legs and pulled guard. Punches rained down on Art, but he was able to keep moving his head and keep his attacker close to his chest.

Art’s hips lifted as he attempted a triangle choke, but his attacker stood up to avoid it—exactly what Art wanted him to do. Art rotated his body, snatching the attacker’s ankle. He torqued the attacker’s leg against its natural range of motion, and his opponent cried out as he tapped. Art stood up, and the instructor came over and patted him on the shoulder.

“Not bad. Little judo, little jiu jitsu, some krav maga. You’re clearly battle-tested and knowledgeable,” Steve, the combat instructor, said. Art was at a local dojo called Battlefield, brushing up on his self-defense before the wedding. Battlefield was a non-denominational martial arts studio that focused on taking the most practical parts of each martial art and testing them in what one would expect from real-life situations.

“I think he got my arm when I reached for the knife,” Art said, revealing a slash of red marker down his right forearm.
